Em Pope (PhD) - Founder of Root Waymarking

I am a researcher, practitioner, and creative, guided by my own affinity with nature and inspired by the positive impact that outdoor experiences can create for people, places, and nature. I love to explore how adventure can enhance, maintain, and inspire people’s relationship with the rest of nature and attachment to place, and what this means for their wellbeing, values, and behaviours.

Since completing my PhD in Transformational Adventure, I have worked in various roles and sectors including community engagement for a National Landscape and as a freelance researcher practitioner exploring and optimising the experience of nature connection within adventure and recreation contexts with BCorps, Universities, and not-for-profits. My current day job is at my desk working in environmental social science.

Root Waymarking and Root Maps are my creative outlet and way of getting my learnings and ideas out in the form of souvenirs, tools, talks, and consultancy. Sharing my love of gentle adventure, encouraging the collection of moments per mile, and inspiring love and care for the rest of nature.
